In Support of the "Last Mile" Moratorium - 888 7th St.

Dear San Francisco Board of Supervisors,

As residents and owners at 888 7th Street, we support Supervisor Walton’s proposed moratorium on “last mile” shipping facilities in San Francisco.

Our building of 226 residential units, including 175 Below Market Rate homes, is located immediately next to the proposed Amazon shipping facility at the former Recology yard. We have many concerns about this massive project.

Amazon anticipates its facility will operate nonstop – 365 days per year – with 175 delivery vans and 20 freight trucks coming and going on a 24 hour basis. It also plans to create nearly 400 parking spaces for employees. Our neighborhood is already experiencing heavy traffic congestion, and this increased traffic will create gridlock and safety issues, especially for the many children and seniors in our building. We are also very concerned about increased air pollution and its impact on our health. With the exhaust from CalTrains, our census track is already in the top 1% statewide for risk from diesel emissions.

Over the past ten years, the Design District has become home to thousands of San Franciscans while preserving critically needed land for businesses and jobs. This massive, shipping facility falls far short of the vision set forth in the Eastern Neighborhoods Plans for a vital and cohesive mixed-use district “focusing in particular on design-related uses” that “supports walking and sustains a diverse, active and safe public realm.”

We are calling on Mayor Breed, the Board of Supervisors, and the Planning Department to pause approvals of such "last mile" facilities to allow time for the study of impacts and alternatives.
